3 Old Fashioned Ways to Brew Coffee

3 minute read

There’s something magical about the first cup of coffee of the day. If you are a coffee-lover like me, chances are good you’ve spent your coffee-drinking years searching for the perfect cup to bring that extra spark to your morning.  We could talk about different grounds, types of beans, espressos, milk, and more, but one of the best ways to extract the most pleasing flavor from your coffee beans or ground coffee is to find the correct old fashioned ways to brew coffee for you!

Believe it or not, you don’t have to have the fanciest machine to brew coffee. Here are three of my favorite old-fashioned ways to brew coffee!

French Press Coffee

This method has been the go-to old-fashioned way to brew coffee for a century! The French press method started in Italy, but the first patent for the French Press as we know it today was filed in the late 1920s in–you guessed it– France! Not only is this one of the fastest ways, but it also produces highly flavorful coffee. With this method, I can make eight rich and delicious cups of coffee within five minutes.

To make coffee with this method, you need to soak the coarsely ground coffee in the French press pot, steep, and then strain in boiling water. This technique helps diffuse those wonderful coffee smells, plenty of caffeine, and antioxidants, resulting in pure flavor!

Flavor: Pure, Clean, and Strong

Grind Size: Granulated, like raw sugar

Ratio: 3 tablespoons of coffee per 1 cup of water

Brew Time: 4 minutes

Pour Over/ Drip Method

It is one of the oldest, fastest, and simplest ways to make delicious and flavorful coffee. All you need is a coffee cone and a paper filter to have the perfect cup of coffee within a couple of minutes.

Just ground the coffee beans evenly and then place them in a paper filter or cone. Then, pour hot boiling water over it. The gravity will work its magic. The brewed coffee will pass through the grounds and into your pot or cup.

Flavor: Pure and Strong

Grind Size: Moderately Fine

Ratio: 21 grams of coffee for 1 cup

Brew Time: 1 to 3 minutes

Cold Brew

Cold-brew is more than a trendy cup of Joe from your neighborhood coffee shop–it’s one of the most flavorful and straightforward old-fashioned ways to brew coffee that you can do at home (while you sleep!) Serving breakfast to a crowd? Cold-brew is easy to make in a bit batch for your friends and family. But I won’t judge you if you drink it all yourself!

Flavor: Smooth, sweet, and full-bodied

Grind Size: Course

Ratio: 1 cup of whole coffee beans, 4 cups of filtered water

Brew Time: 12 hours

When it comes to coffee, it all boils down to your taste and preference–and we can’t forget the coffee grounds themselves! A great old-fashioned way to brew coffee is only as good as the coffee you use. Pick your favorite coffee brewing method and enjoy the simple pleasure of a perfect cup of coffee anytime you want! Look for coffee beans that are slow-roasted in small batches for exceptional flavor.
