A capsule wardrobe is a collection of versatile, timeless pieces that can be mixed and matched to create a variety of different outfits. Building a capsule wardrobe can be a great way to simplify your closet, save money, and reduce the time you spend getting dressed each day. Here are some tips I began employing to help me build a capsule wardrobe:
- Start with the basics: A capsule wardrobe should include a variety of basic pieces that can be easily mixed and matched. Some essential items to include are a white t-shirt, a black t-shirt, a denim jacket, a pair of jeans, a little black dress, a pair of black pants, a pencil skirt and a neutral-colored blazer.
- Invest in quality: When building a capsule wardrobe, it's important to invest in high-quality, well-made pieces that will last for years. Look for items made from durable fabrics like cotton, linen, or wool, and choose classic styles that won't go out of fashion. This is a hard one. Fast fashion is real these days. Try to stay away from overly trendy items.
-
Add a pop of color: A capsule wardrobe doesn't have to be all black and white. Adding a pop of color can make your outfits more interesting and fun. A red dress, a green blouse, or a colorful bag can add a touch of personality to your wardrobe. Personally, I am trying to start with the basics first before I add color.
-
Consider your lifestyle: When building a capsule wardrobe, it's important to consider your lifestyle and the types of occasions you'll be dressing for. If you work in a formal office, you'll need more professional pieces like blazers and pencil skirts. If you're a stay-at-home mom, you'll want more comfortable, casual pieces like yoga pants and t-shirts.
-
Accessorize: Once you have your basic pieces in place, you can use accessories to change up your look. A statement necklace, a cute bag like the leather one I carry below, or get your nails painted bright to add interest.

Shop smart: Be mindful of what you already have in your wardrobe and what you need to fill the gaps. Before buying something new, ask yourself if it's something you'll wear more than once and if it will go with other items in your wardrobe.
By following these tips, you'll be able to build a versatile, timeless capsule wardrobe that will serve you well for years to come. With a capsule wardrobe, you'll be able to get dressed quickly and confidently, knowing that you have a collection of pieces that work well together and make you feel great. This is a process. It has taken me quite some time to go through the seasons and clean out and replace with this new mentality. What are your thoughts on this? I'd love to hear! Email me at wendi@wendismarket.com
