Who doesn't love the satisfying crunch and flavorful simplicity of tortilla chips? These versatile snacks are perfect for dipping into salsas, and guacamole, or enjoying on their own. While store-bought options are readily available, making tortilla chips at home is surprisingly easy and allows you to customize them to your taste. Today I want to show you how a step-by-step process to make your own healthy homemade tortilla chips that are guaranteed to impress your family and friends.
Ingredients:
- Corn tortillas
- Avacado oil (while you can use vegetable or canola oil, avocado oil is the healthier option and with its higher cook point it works well with higher heat cooking)
- Salt
- Lime juice (optional)
Instructions:
Preparing the Tortillas:
-
Start by preheating your oven to 375°F. This temperature ensures that the chips bake evenly without burning.
-
Take corn tortillas (you can use either store-bought or homemade) and stack them on a cutting board.
-
Using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter, cut the tortillas into triangular shapes. You can make them as big or as small as you prefer.
-
Place tortilla wedges in a large cooking bowl and toss with avocado oil and a generous amount of salt (or as much as you want).
Baking the Tortilla Chips:
-
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
-
Arrange the cut tortilla triangles in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, making sure they don't overlap. Depending on how much you are making, you may have to do them in batches.
-
If you want to add in cayenne pepper or paprika do so now.
-
If desired, sprinkle a pinch of salt evenly over the tortilla triangles for added flavor. Be mindful not to oversalt as the chips will shrink during baking, intensifying the seasoning.
-
Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for about 10-15 minutes or until the tortilla chips turn golden brown and crisp. Keep an eye on them as they can quickly go from perfectly crispy to overdone.
-
Add a hint of lime juice for additional flavor.
Alternative cooking methods for homemade tortilla chips
If you prefer frying, you can heat a couple of inches of cooking oil in a deep pan or skillet over medium heat. Carefully place a few tortilla triangles into the hot oil and fry until golden brown and crispy. Remove them using tongs or a slotted spoon and let them drain on a paper towel-lined plate to remove excess oil.
Another option is to use an air fryer, which requires no oil or very little oil depending on your preference. Simply arrange the tortilla triangles in a single layer in the air fryer basket, and cook them at around 350°F (175°C) for approximately 8-10 minutes or until they reach the desired level of crispness.
Serving and storing your healthy homemade tortilla chips:
Once your homemade tortilla chips are ready, let them cool for a few minutes before serving. This helps them become even crispier. We suggest serving them with your favorite dips, such as salsa, guacamole, or even queso dip. They're also fantastic on their own as a quick snack.
Try pairing it with our hatch green chile salsa or our medium-hat Colorado Bold Chip Salsa for a little taste of the Southwest. Or pair it with our best-selling queso.
To store any leftover tortilla chips, allow them to cool completely and transfer them to an airtight container or a resealable plastic bag. They can be stored at room temperature for up to a week, but for maximum freshness, it's best to consume them within a few days.
I think making your own healthy homemade tortilla chips at home is a fun and rewarding process. By following these simple steps, you'll have a batch of crispy, flavorful tortilla chips that are far superior to their store-bought counterparts. Whether you're hosting a gathering or craving a tasty snack, these homemade healthy tortilla chips are sure to be a hit. Enjoy!
